Our next European SBOM user group meeting will focus on post-quantum crypto (PQC) and the Cryptography Bill of Materials. Tomas Gustavsson, chief PKI officer at Keyfactor and founder of the open source EJBCA PKI platform will guide us through the PQC status and we’ll discuss CBOMs after that.
While many manufacturers are working on CRA compliance and many other are working to get up to date with NIS2 requirements, the post quantum crypto migration goes along in parallel. The standards are getting in place, implementations are being created and the first large usage is already out there on the net.
The immediate concern is crypto harvesting – actors recording data traffic now that will be easily decrypted later.
Organisations needs to start planning a migration to full PQC support, starting with sensitive data streams and then migrating other systems. In order to make a plan and start execution there is a need for a roadmap, an overview of which crypto is used and where? Certificates, algorithms, implementations, keys, HSMs… The Cryptography Bill of Materials (CBOM) is the inventory that is the foundation for this work.
